Riding Crops
Jumping bat
A jumping bat is the show jumper’s version of a riding crop. They are generally short and lightweight. They usually have quite a big keeper, or leather flap on the end, so you get a good sound when you use them. Show jumpers generally don’t use a jumping crop to discipline their horses, but rather for a quick tap on the neck for encouragement. They are usually lightweight and quite stiff, so you can use it in a split second while jumping. All the riding crops in this category will fit into these specifications; hence they are all jumping bats.
Mine tend to last forever and eventually become quite sentimental…. After you’ve jumped loads of rounds with them you feel as though you and your jumping bat have been through a lot together. It may sound daft, but I definitely have my lucky jumping bat that I have to have at shows with me. Maybe you can also find yours here as well…
