Jumping exercises for green horses and novice riders

So in these jumping exercises for green horses, you’ll get a good warmup routine. Followed by the actual exercise that has three different ways to ride it. So you start off with the easiest way to ride it, and progress to the most challenging way to ride it. The video below shows you all you’ll need to know. It also includes detailed setup instructions.

For the novice rider, it will help you get better at seeing a stride or a distance. It will give you a better feeling for the correct pace to travel through a related distance, and help you travel through them safely and correctly. For the young horse, it will work on their jumping technique and strength. It will work on their adjustability and balance. As well as their control and obedience. It will also teach them to travel through a related distance smoothly and calmly.

Watch the video below for all the details.

How to set these jumping exercises for green horses up

The setup is definitely easier to follow off the video, but I’ll do my best to explain it verbally as well. You are most welcome to save the image of the course plan below to your phone. It’s much easier to set up off your phone.

Ok so we have a nice simple setup again this week, so you have no excuses not to set this up in your arena.

Jump 1
So let’s start off with the jump in the center of your arena. Try to get it as close to the center of the arena as you can. So it’s a vertical with a placing pole on each side of it. The placing poles are 3 paces away on both sides… If you are keeping the jump really small you can make the placing pole on the take-off side of the jump 2 and a half paces away.
Jump 4 and 5
Next, you then set up this line, oxer to vertical, or vertical to an oxer. You jump it going both ways, so make sure you have a ground line on both sides of these jumps. Also, try to get it as much in the center of the long side of the arena as possible. It rides down on seven strides so it walks 32 paces. Again if the jumps are small you can do 31 paces.
Cavaletti’s
Then down the other long side of the arena you set up these two cavalettis as a related distance. Also as close to the middle of the long side of your arena as you can. The distance rides down on 5 strides so it walks 22 paces.
Jump 2
Next set up this oxer and vertical at angles like this. They basically need to mirror each other, except the one is an oxer and the other is a vertical. You ride to these jumps from the vertical in the middle of the arena, so make sure they’re set up at an angle that gives you a nice smooth ride to them.
Jump 3
And then again you mirror these two jumps on either side of your arena. Oxer and vertical.
