The Early Years in Lage-Mierde
Harrie Smolders grew up with his parents and sister in the small village of Lage-Mierde in Brabant, The Netherlands. At 8, he started riding a pony, affectionately known as Smurf, originally his sister’s. Harrie’s love for horses was evident from a young age, as he couldn’t bear the thought of parting with Smurf, so he took over the reins.
A Football Fanatic and Career Choices
Harrie was also a football fanatic until the age of 16 and considered pursuing it as a career. However, his passion for riding won out. At 18, he moved to Meppel in Drente, where he began his professional equestrian journey.
Formative Years with Johan Heins and Axel Verlooy
For more than four years, Harrie rode for the stable of former European champion Johan Heins. This experience was invaluable as he honed his skills and coached gifted young horses. In 2002, he made the switch to Axel Verlooy’s stable, taking over the reins of two prestigious stallions, Emerald N.O.P and Don VHP Z. This move propelled him into the spotlight, showcasing the breadth and strength of his talent.
Rise to Superstardom
With Emerald N.O.P and Don VHP Z, Harrie achieved remarkable success, winning prestigious Grand Prix events and championships around the world. Their partnership led to victories in the Rolex Grand Prix of Aachen, the Longines FEI World Cup Final, and the Spruce Meadows Masters, among others. His standout wins include the Longines Global Champions Tour Grand Prix of Doha and the Global Champions Tour Grand Prix of Shanghai.
World Number One
In June 2017, Harrie Smolders reached the pinnacle of his career when he became the world number one-ranked showjumper. His reign at the top lasted for an impressive 27 weeks, during which he showcased his dominance and skill in the sport.
Family Life and Dedication to the Sport
Harrie lives with his partner Inge and their sons Pim and Siep in the Netherlands. Even outside of competitions, he remains dedicated to his horses, spending every day at the stables.
