Waterford Snaffle Bit

This is a great bit. As I’ve said before, this bit is like your Grandma, kind yet firm. You don’t have the nutcracker action that pinches or goes into the roof of the mouth, but the mouth piece is firm enough to stop them leaning on your hand. I put rubber guards on this bit, as I do all loose ring snaffles, to make sure their lips don’t get pinched. It’s a really versatile bit that can be used on many types of horses. If you’re scratching your head as to what bit you think your horse should go in, give this one a go, you may be pleasantly surprised. It’s not going to cost an arm and a leg, as many other bits do. And it’s certainly worth having in your bit collection

Why buy a Waterford Snaffle bit?

The Waterford Snaffle bit has been around for decades. And this is primarily because it works really well and horses like it. At first glance it may appear to be quite harsh but it moulds really well to the horse’s mouth, creating a nice even pressure. It is moveable in all directions and horses find it difficult to lean or take hold of it, giving the rider good levels of control.

Strong horses seem to accept the Waterford rather than a Pelham or curb-type bit, as its action is broken when the horse goes to set its jaw. The bit is very loose in the horse’s mouth so they seem to mouth more with this bit. There is no nutcracker action, so horse’s don’t lean on it. However it isn’t a harsh bit, so they will go onto it without problems. But equally, it is strong enough to bring them back off the bit without trouble.
